How to Mix Phoscrete F1-HC: Step-by-Step Instructions
Phoscrete F1-HC is a rapid-setting, magnesium-phosphate-cement (MPC) repair material designed for horizontal and castable concrete repairs. Proper mixing is critical to ensure optimal performance, bond strength, and a smooth finish. Follow these steps for a hassle-free, reliable repair every time.
What You’ll Need
- Phoscrete F1-HC Dry Mix (bag)
- Phoscrete F1-HC Liquid Activator (jug)
- Clean, dry mixing bucket (5-gallon minimum)
- Heavy-duty drill with mixing paddle or auger
- Measuring scoop (for admixtures, if needed)
- Clean trowels and finishing tools
- Personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses, dust mask)
- Ice/cooler (for activator in warm weather)
- Hot water (for activator in cold weather)
Step-by-Step Mixing Instructions
1. Pre-Check & Preparation
- Inspect labels: Always check the “use by” date on both the dry mix and activator. Do not use expired materials.
- Condition materials: For best working time, store dry mix in a cool, dry place.
- In hot weather: Chill activator to 40°F (5°C) using ice/cooler.
- In cold weather: Warm activator in hot water (do not boil).
- Dry substrate: Ensure the repair area is clean and dry (Phoscrete bonds best to dry, not SSD, concrete).
2. Add Activator First
- Pour the entire contents of the Phoscrete F1-HC liquid activator jug into the empty mixing bucket.
- Never add water—use only the supplied activator.
3. Add Dry Mix
- Gradually add the entire bag of F1-HC dry mix into the bucket while starting the mixer on low speed.
4. Mix Thoroughly
- Use a heavy-duty drill with a paddle or auger to mix for at least 1 minute.
- Scrape the sides and bottom of the bucket once during mixing to ensure all powder is wetted.
- The mix should be smooth, lump-free, and uniform in texture. No dry powder should remain.
5. Add Admixtures (Optional)
- If required (e.g., for very hot or cold weather), add the appropriate number of scoops of Phoscrete Fast-Set (for cold) or Slow-Set (for hot) admixture to the activator before adding dry mix.
- See the Admix usage chart for correct dosing.
6. Place Immediately
- Pour or trowel the mixed Phoscrete F1-HC into the prepared repair area without delay.
- Typical working time: 5–15 minutes (temperature dependent).
- Do not wait—Phoscrete sets fast!
7. Clean Up
- Phoscrete mixes clean and generally does not stick to tools or buckets.
- After the final batch, rinse tools and buckets with water.
- Clean hands with soap and water.
Pro Tips
- For large repairs: Mix multiple kits in a mortar mixer (in cold weather) or use a continuous-feed mixer.
- For warm weather: Keep activator and tools out of direct sunlight until use.
- Never add water: Adding water will compromise strength and durability.
- Check your finish: Place and finish in lifts if the repair is deep; Phoscrete bonds to itself with no cold joints.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using expired or improperly stored material.
- Adding water or partial kits.
- Under-mixing or over-mixing.
- Waiting too long to place after mixing.
- Not cleaning slurry from saw cuts before placement.
